I still use an OLD iPad (circa 2010, limited to iOS 12.xxx), which until the last update was yet another place to get alerts. (I have newer devices in play too, each in a convenient to me location.)
The latest iOS version update, ended that ability, HamAlert won’t run now on iOS 12. Splash screen and quit is what is shown.
I don’t expect a fix, so score this as a whine. It just grinds on me to have working hardware (even the battery is original and still works) that runs most apps not be allowed to do so.
Unfortunately Apple makes it nearly impossible for me to test new app releases on such old iOS versions, and the need for a small fraction of users to run the app on very old hardware needs to be balanced against the effort required to support that.
But what I’ve done now is I’ve submitted a new app version 1.9.5 that explicitly only supports iOS 15+, and marked 1.9.4 as unavailable for downloading as a “last-compatible version”. So in theory, if you delete the HamAlert app on your old iPad and reinstall it from the App Store now, this should cause it to download app version 1.9.3, which still works on iOS 12.
Apple and Microsoft are hand in hand with hardware manufacturers to generate more sales and income. It is not a coincidence that the latest code demands the latest hardware.
But I’m one to use the hardware bought and paid for until it no longer has merit to me (hurray linux!). The old iPad is on that list and may eventually be given to someone to use in teaching their kids (when the battery finally fails).
